It all starts with faith.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

That first step in God was when you understood in your heart that you couldn't do it without Jesus. Your life was a failure without Him.

There is a responsibility in being a Christian that you have to take up. It is that first stepping stone in that river.

2 Pet 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue;

What a great stone to step on. God tells us to add to your faith virtue. There are things in your life that may not be sinful but he says to choose only things that are virtuous. Does your choice of attire allow you to be virtuous appearing? Does your manner of conversation sound virtuous? Do you allow life styles that are not virtuous? It is not a return back to the law, it is merely a choice to step on out to cross that river and the next stone is simply adding virtue to your life.

3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
