Thumbtack or a Nail? Written by C. E. Strain from a sermon by Bro Earl Chavis. When you enter a Church, the first thing you see is the bulletin board with all the announcements, dates, events, and basic gossip of the Church. As you look down the hallway, you will see the coat hooks for everyone to place their coats. If the church is fancy, these might be made of brass, if not, they just might be a simple nail on the wall. A thumbtack has a big head and very little depth. It will hold tidbits on the wall. Are you a thumbtack in the house of the Lord? When somebody comes to you for help, are you a thumbtack to hold what you found out about this person, as a bit of gossip and to place on the wall for all to read? Or are you a nail in the hallway? The nail is there to hold the coat of a friend or visitor. It carries the burden. It shares the cares of this life with the person that carried in the coat. Saul held the coat of those that were stoning Steven. He held the coat so that harm would be done to Steven. But to be a nail in the Church is to share the weight of someone's' load. That is being a nail in the House of the Lord. Some people are so much a part of the Church that you don't even think that they are there. It might be they are the ones holding the paneling to the wall studs. They are the nails holding the walls together. They are completely nailed into the walls for no one to see. Get some depth, don't be a thumbtack. Be the nail in the hall way to welcome someone and share their load in life. Isa 22:23 And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he
shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.
