A Certain Woman.

Mini sermon by C. E. Strain

In a day when a myriad of problems stand before each of us. How can we win our battles? How can we change our difficulties? How can life's challenges be changed? I think of an account in the Bible of "a certain woman".

In the Book of Judges, we find a King run amuck. That was not his name, his name was Abimelech. He was not a king from royalty, well, his father was royal, but his mother was a concubine. And Abimelech was ruthless. In fact he had his brothers killed.

And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham they youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself. Judges 9:5

In one city that he took, he even caused any wounded person who entered the city after the battle, to still suffer grief and pain.

And Abinelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt. Judges 9:45

You can image the pain of walking on salt with wounds.

Then went Abinelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it. Judges 9:50

But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower. Judges 9:51

And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire. Judges 9:52

Now, here is a King run amuck. He has killed his brothers, thousands of men and women, and distroyed countless cities. Kind of sounds like the problems that you have to face each day. Just how do you change the situations that you face?

Well the Bible talks about this "certain woman". Just what can one individual do against such a mighty man of war?

This certain woman had fled to this tower. The Bible says, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." Prov 18:10

And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to break his skull. Judges 9:53

This certain woman dropped a millstone upon this mighty man of war. It didn't kill the King, only wounded him. In fact, the King didn't want it to be said that a woman killed him, so he had his armourbearer kill him.

Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died. Judges 9:53

I'm sure the woman looked over the ledge and began to sing, "Look what the Lord hath done!"

No matter how the odds look against you, God can make a way for you to be victorious in your battles!
